FISHING REPORT 4/7/2011

I HAVEN’T HAD A CHANCE TO GO FISHING MYSELF, NOT REALLY FISHING. I DID GET A CHANCE ALMOST 2 WEEKS AGO TO HIKE INTO WINDSOR RIVER PARK DURING A SHORT BREAK IN ONE OF THE IMPRESSIVE STORMS THAT BATTERED SANTA ROSA UNMERCIFULLY.
IF YOU AREN’T FAMILIAR WITH WINDSOR RIVERFRONT PARK IT IS REALLY SPECIAL WHAT THEY HAVE DONE WITH THAT AREA. THE PARK HAS THREE LAKES AND 1 MILE OF RUSSIAN RIVERFRONT FOR A NICE VARIETY OF FISHING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE AND REALLY PEACEFUL DURING THE WEEK.

HOW IS THE SALMON SEASON GOING?
THE LONG AWAITED SPORTS SALMON SEASON OPENED APRIL 2ND ON the North Coast. I wish I could tell you first hand how it is going but unfortunately¬† I haven’t been out because my “very special friend” and I aren’t really getting along at this moment, and he’s got the boat.
I do know that the ocean didn’t really cooperate she was a bit “tight” so there weren’t as many boats out as would be expected.

THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW FISH LANDED DOWN BODEGA WAY.
HOPEFULLY I WILL HAVE MORE TO REPORT ON THE LATER.

THE RUSSIAN RIVER REMAINS BLOWN, EVEN I WOULDN’T FISH IT AND IF I GET A HANKERIN’ I WILL FISH ANYWHERE ANY TIME.SOME SLIGHTLY GOOD NEWS BOTH LAKE SONOMA AND LAKE MENDOCINO HAVE CUT THEIR RELEASES AND WITH LAKES DROPPING THAT SHOULD PUT THE RIVER DOWN TO ABOUT 3,000 CFS AND THEIR IS TALK OF POSSIBLE “DOWNRUNNERS” AND MAYBE SOME “BLUEBACKS”BY THIS WEEKEND. ACCORDING TO NICK WHEELER OF KINGS SPORTS IN GUERNEVILLE THERE SHOULD BE SHAD FISHING NEXT MONTH.

MEANWHILE UP WHERE I USE TO FISH

TRINITY RIVER

THEY SAY THE FISHING HAS BEEN FUN.

FROM THE OLD BRIDGE DOWNSTREAM YOU WILL FIND AN ABUNDANCE OF HATCHERY SALMON AND STEELIES BETWEEN 8″-10″. THESE SMOLTS WERE RELEASED BY THE MILLIONS ON MARCH 15TH AND CAN BE GREAT FISHING.

Try fishing for them in the early morning and evenings, presenting a Wooley
Bugger on a RIO DC 15′ Type 6 Sink Tip Line. Throw those buggers at the bank,
from a boat, and strip, strip. Any type of streamer or string leech pattern
should prove effective. Courtesy of The Fly Shop.
